From Midday to Argentinean Wine

It was my pleasure to be a guest today on Midday with Katherine Perkins – 640 on the dial, WOI. We talked about Make Mine Wine, one of my favorite subjects. I know she has a great audience – hope you were one of the listeners! Katherine asked about the experts we use to write for the magazine … and I was glad that she did. It is the first time a reporter has asked that question.

I mentioned two of our writers … and should have mentioned three. Michael Adams, the wine-knowledgeable, well-traveled writer who will showcase the Hermann,  Missouri wine trail in our next issue is exceptional. I was remiss in not mentioning Shelli McConnell, a food expert who develops our easy to prepare, delicious, wine-friendly recipes. The excellent brunch recipes featured in our next issue will be perfect for many families this spring.

I am also privileged to be working with Kent Darr, a veteran reporter and editor who has a deep interest in the Midwest grape and wine industry. The goal for each of our writers is to provide relevant, interesting and useable information for our readers.

We also like to provide some surprises … such as the great Argentinean wine recommended in our next issue!

Anyone have a guess as to which Iowa restaurant recommends it?  Cheers!

Wine and Hospitality

What is more inviting than a friendly bed and breakfast? Your favorite beckons you back again and again because you know how well you will be treated. The warmth, kindness and generosity of bed and breakfast owners are gifts of genuine hospitality.

Today I met some of Iowa’s fine innkeepers at their annual conference in Ames. I introduced them to Make Mine Wine and I could tell right away it was a perfect match.  The industry thrives on creating more reasons to travel Iowa … and visiting Iowa wineries and vineyards is a good reason to hit the road.

Eagles Landing Bed & Breakfast and Winery lives in both worlds. Roger and Connie Halvorson have a national award-winning Bed and Breakfast on the river in Marquette. http://halvorson.org/eagleslanding/  They feature ethnic Norwegian, German and American 4-course breakfasts … with complimentary wine from their winery. They were featured as part of The Iowa Wine Trail in the fall issue of Make Mine Wine.  Attendees at today’s Iowa Bed and Breakfast Innkeepers luncheon were treated to samples of Eagles Landing’s delicious wine.

Bed and Breakfasts are important to Iowa’s tourism industry … and so is Iowa wine. What a winning combination!  Cheers!Barb

P.S. Now is a great time to book a getaway to relax and rejuvenate.  Check out the great Bed and Breakfasts in

Innovation … Support … Excellence

I was working until Saturday in Florida and missed the Iowa Wine Growers Association’s Annual Conference. Each attendee received a copy of Make Mine Wine, and, no doubt, a creative spark, a best practice or a new idea from the speakers who presented valuable information.

Monday night I had the privilege of introducing Make Mine Wine to an interesting collection of entrepreneurial-minded Central Iowa business people. At the event, hosted by Tom Steen of Transition Capital Management, six business owners outlined their business visions, strategies and needs. I was captivated by the creativity of each of the young businesses showcased. Each has designed products and services to meet the needs of a specific audience and are working and thinking hard to find the path to success. The successful people in the audience have the experience, knowledge and ideas that can help the young companies succeed. The evening was inspiring and I was honored to be there.

A day of photography was on tap for Tuesday.  Make Mine Wine editor, Kent Darr, and I spent an enjoyable day in awe of the creativity and attention to detail that Dean Tanner of Primary Image brings to each and every photograph. You’ll know what I mean when you see the cover of our upcoming issue. Food stylist Janet Pittman worked her magic, and Cynthia Betts, our table landscape artist, contributed as well. The snow was flying outside, but we were appreciating the sights and smells and beauty of spring, as well as the excellent customer service we received from Dean and his team.

I was captivated by bright young minds setting off creative sparks in Building 7 at Des Moines Area Community College on Wednesday when Kent and I interviewed Paul Gospodarczyk and Randall Vos. Stay tuned and hold on. Enologist Paul and viticulturist Randall are quickly putting conferences, competitions and educational programs in place that will rocket Iowa to the forefront of the Midwest wine industry. You can read about Paul in the spring issue of Make Mine Wine.   I’m a creative person and it is easy for me to see the strong connection between innovative new businesses and new industries, supportive successful business people, and excellence in customer service.

When I was in Florida I heard Seth Godin (Purple Cow marketing guru) say, “Ideas that spread win.” So make or do something excellent worth talking about. Later from the stage, Ronan Tynan talked about the power of encouragement.

Innovation … Support … Excellence.  It can make all of the difference!

Cheers!

Wine with The Super Bowl

The teams in Miami are strutting proud, ready to go.

The official vehicle – Cadillac Escalade – is on the countdown tour.

Bets are placed on just about every play of the game.

You and your fanatic friends know where you’ll gather.

The meal and snacks are planned and purchased.

Everything is ready for kick-off … right?

Wait? What about the wine?

If you don’t know what to serve, or bring, you can find the answer in Make Mine Wine.  Recommendations on page 36 in the Tailgate Beverage Lineup are sure to please your non-beer drinking friends.

  • Try Shiraz by the Box to compliment big, bold foods off the grill.

  • Lucy Lane from Jasper Winery in Newton is found in many local grocery stores and can be made into a wonderful mulled warm wine – check the recipe at jasperwinery.com.
  • Cedar Ridge Marechal Foch is a dry, medium-bodied red — wonderful chilled. Crwine.com
  • Wallace Winery in West Branch has a crowd-pleaser, Chardonel – a Chadonnay-like sipper.
  • Kick-back, enjoy your friends, the food and THE WINE! It will be super!

    Cheers!
